WHAT IS THE PAISLEY VISION BOARD?
 
The Paisley Vision Board is a Public/ Private Sector body whose aim is to oversee the regeneration of Paisley Town Centre.
 
Representatives of the Board include the Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce ( www.renfrewshirechamber.com), Renfrewshire Council (www.renfrewshire.gov.uk), Scottish Enterprise Renfrewshire (www.scottish-enterprise.com), Strathclyde Police (www.strathclyde.police.uk), the University of the West of Scotland (www.uws.ac.uk), Renfrewshire Council for Voluntary Services (http://rcvs.synthasite.com/) and a number of individual business people and retailers. The 10-year, £50 million investment programme was announced in August 2006. Entitled 'Paisley town centre - a strategy for regeneration and transformation', the plan aims to kick-start an action plan to breathe life back into the area and create a bustling hub. The demise of the town centre has been a result of market forces and is a pattern found throughout the UK, where retail parks have flourished. The study included the future of the town centre, it’s residential potential, the town as a transport hub, and establishing a greater engagement with town centre owner/occupiers and agents.
 
The key recommendations of the report were:

-to recognise Paisley's strengths in that it has a large catchment, a substantial business base, a thriving university, proximity to the airport and M8, handsome town-centre buildings and an existing retail base to build on.

-to acknowledge that the retail sector will never return to what it was. It may continue to shrink and consolidate, but that it is crucial to provide high-quality housing, encourage more students to live in town, to develop more business space and to nurture the creative community in order to establish a stable and affluent future.
 
-investment needs to be spent in the town centre with some £10 million from the public purse. The public funding would act as a catalyst for private sector investment. Investment at this level will generate at least 2,000 new jobs.

“We want to diversify what happens in the town centre and get away from the idea that you only come into the town centre to shop. We want a more contemporary town centre where more people live, socialise and work and there are a different range of events."
